Recap: Major cast shakeup coming for Total Divas season 9

A major cast shakeup is coming to the ninth season of Total Divas.
Raw Women’s champion Ronda Rousey is being added to the cast according to the website Squared Circle Sirens and E! cameras were at her farm last week to commence filming.
In what is maybe a surprise, Nikki and Brie Bella will not be returning to the series. Both had been an integral part of the show over the past eight seasons but Ryan Satin over at Pro Wrestling Sheet adds to the story that the Bellas will now be concentrating on their Total Bellas show moving forward.
Former Smackdown General Manager Paige will also not return for the ninth season after being re-added to the cast last year.
Carmella, Natalya, Nia Jax, Sonya Deville and Naomi will be the other individuals featured on the show along with Rousey.

‘The better team won’ – Glasgow’s Townsend gracious after defeat to Munster

GREGOR TOWNSEND SAYS he still believes Glasgow can qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions Cup after their 14-12 defeat to Rassie Erasmus’ Munster.

While small sections of the home crowd at Scotstoun were thoroughly displeased with the manner of Munster’s win, booing resoundingly at the final whistle, Townsend was gracious in defeat, saying that the visitors were deserving winners.

Francis Saili’s late try proved to be the difference between the teams after a cranky affair, with the crucial score coming after Stuart Hogg had been sin binned for a high tackle on Andrew Conway.

“The players are hugely disappointed because they put a lot of effort into the game,” said Townsend post-match. “We knew how important this game was for us and for the club as a whole, so to lose it in the last seven or eight minutes is even more disappointing.

The sin-binning of fullback Hogg was met with firm disapproval by many of the Glasgow fans at Scotstoun, but Townsend wasn’t complaining about Luke Pearce’s decision afterwards.

“It was a fair call,” said the former Scotland out-half. “I thought the referee had an excellent game. He communicated really well with both sets of players.

“That was a very passionate and competitive affair, so to be refereeing with such control is a credit to him.”

Townsend also complimented the “very good” Munster defence, which again proved vital in victory for the province, and he also said that the visitors had proved to be more clinical in the 22 than Glasgow were.

While this defeat leaves Warriors on 14 points, and with Munster already qualified as winners of Pool 1, there is still some prospect of Townsend’s side advancing into the knockouts.

They face a trip to Welford Road next weekend, where they need to beat Leicester.

“We’ll have to play better,” said Townsend. “We always knew that we’d have to win next week, even if we’d won today. I still believe a win will get us into the quarter-finals, but that will become more clear in the next few days.

“I believe in this squad, I know we can play better. We just have to take our game up another 10 to 20% next week.”

‘A massive talent in the group that isn’t expressing itself’: Kiss and Ulster left searching for answers

ULSTER’S DIRECTOR OF Rugby Les Kiss says the squad keep challenging themselves every week but the same errors keep knocking them back after his side’s 26-22 loss to Bordeaux-Begles.

It was a fourth straight defeat for Ulster in all competitions, their second of the season at the Kingspan Stadium, and their ninth loss in their last 13 matches, a run which has seen them slip to sixth in the Guinness Pro12 and finish bottom of their Champions Cup pool.

It’s been nothing short of a wretched run for Ulster, who have watched as a promising start to the season has gone down the pan, and now fans are searching for answers to an infinite number of questions about their team.

So, it seems, are the coaching staff, with Kiss admitting that if they get caught up trying to work out all the small details it could go against them.

“I think you can get lost in trying to pick out a lot of things,” the Australian coach began. “You are asking for one thing. We just have to trust we are doing the right things.

“We’ve challenged ourselves every week, since the Connacht game, that we haven’t won since then to work on the solutions we think are right.

“The truth is if we can be a little bit more clinical at times, lower the error rate those types of things we may just stretch that scoreline to mitigate for some of the things that do not happen for us.

“But in the end it has not been, so we just have to suck it up and ensure that we work hard on what we have to work hard on, stick together and get the job done.”

The issue is these problems have existed since that first defeat of the season in Galway back in October. The wins since then have been few and far between, and the defeats among them have been poor.

Despite talking a lot about confidence not being an issue during the week, from the outside it seems like the mindset within the camp is one that’s hard to shake, with former flanker Stephen Ferris saying as much on Twitter after the game.

Kiss acknowledges that the mood in the camp isn’t exactly the greatest, but says they do believe that they’re not as far off winning as their recent results make them out to be.

“It’s a number things, confidence is certainly part of it,” he replied when asked why the team have struggled for wins.

“There’s a massive talent in the group that isn’t expressing itself as often as we would like. A few errors here and there take away the opportunity to build on it.

“Ultimately, the first thing we need now is the individual and collective will to stick and not lose sight of what we stand for. We need to challenge ourselves in the right way. It would be easy to start throwing things around left, right and centre.

“I truly believe we’re not too far off, we have to stick with it.”

He’ll now get three weeks to overturn this psychological block and get Ulster back into a position where they can mount a challenge for the top four of the Pro12 during the Six Nations.

Ulster’s next game sees them welcome Edinburgh to the Kingspan Stadium on 10 February in a game they can ill afford to lose, both from a league point of view and a mental one.

Going into the short break on the back of four consecutive defeats isn’t ideal, and Kiss is fully aware of that, but he says Ulster cannot allow themselves to get down about their situation.

He admitted: “There’s nothing worse than going into a break with a loss. This will hurt for a while and it should. No one feels comfortable, nobody feels like this is acceptable. We understand that we have to work to get out of this phase.

“I believe in the guys, I believe we can do this season well. I do. It’s not being unrealistic I think, it’s just important we don’t put our heads in the sand and believe woe is me all the time, we’ve got to keep our heads up to a certain degree and stay confident.

“My job isn’t to try and pull the wool over anyone’s eyes, my job is to work towards solutions, work with the guys we have in the team and make sure we have the mental strength to work through this.

“These things happen, we’ve got to come out of it and we have a good chance during the Six Nations to do that.”

Dominant Pres into semis with upset win against last year’s finalists

IN A DAY of upsets, last year’s beaten finalists Crescent College Comprehensive were dumped out of the Munster Senior Cup quarter-finals by an extremely comfortable Presentation Brothers College at Lansdowne.

In the home of Leeside rivals Christians, Pres dominated the game from beginning to end and despite being temporarily reduced to 13 men 10 minutes from time, they claimed a 16-3 win.

Pres dominated the early territory, and could have crossed the line 10 minutes in, but Cian Fitzgerald crossed the touchline just before grounding.

Referee Shane Kiernan had spotted an infringement though, brought play back and showed a yellow card to Crescent flanker Fintan Coleman.

With one less in the pack, Presentation opted to maul, and with little resistance hooker Billy Scannell crossed for the game’s first score.

Out-half Peter Sylvester missed the conversion in the swirling wind, but Crescent’s kicker Mark Shanahan was more accurate 15 minutes later, eating into the lead after Pres infringed at the breakdown.

The Cork side could have had another try just before the interval after Paul Buckley hacked on, but the ball just beat him over the dead-ball line.

It didn’t take long for the second try to arrive however; a clever kick in behind by Sylvester put Crescent on the back foot, and after Presentation recovered possession Gary Bradley’s quick ball released Sam O’Donovan to cross in the corner.

Sylvester then made it a two-score game with a clever drop-goal and it looked like the Mardyke outfit were comfortably through to the semis, before they lost Fitzgerald and then Sylvester to two quick yellows.

Crescent pushed the depleted Pres side late on but failed to really make a dent.

After holding out, Seán French’s penalty in the final moments for the Cork school put any comeback hopes to bed.

Ireland captain Best feels defence got too narrow as Scotland ran riot

IRELAND CAPTAIN RORY Best says his side’s defence got too narrow as Scotland ran riot in the first half to race into a 21-5 lead at one point in their eventual 27-22 victory in Edinburgh.

Ireland did manage to recover from a poor start and earn a 22-21 advantage heading into the closing quarter of the Six Nations opener at Murrayfield, but two late Greig Laidlaw sealed a deserved win for the home side.

“The first half was hugely frustrating because basically almost everything we talked about doing, we didn’t do,” said Best post-match. “We got narrow in defence, we weren’t physical. We knew that they would come at us. We knew we needed to get front-foot ball.

“We knew, especially the way their team was, that we had to be accurate at the breakdown and get our ball carriers across the gainline. We didn’t do any of that. I suppose the only good thing was that at half time, we said he hadn’t done any of that so if we could start to do that, we could start to get back into the game.

“It was just hugely frustrating the way we started that game. If you let a player like Finn Russell have plenty of time to pull the strings, have a couple of steps and throw 30-metre passes to guys like Hogg, Seymour, Maitland, then you’re always going to be struggling.

“For us forwards, we weren’t able to get our spacings, we weren’t able to get off the line and it’s very frustrating.”

The poor start brought back nightmare memories of the 2015 World Cup quarter-final defeat to Argentina for many Ireland fans, with an equally poor effort made in the opening minutes on that occasion.

Best said Ireland had no sense that they were not in a good place mentally, even after their arrival to the stadium was 15 minutes late.

“We prepared well all week,” said Best. “Obviously we were late, but we’re professionals and you’re used to dealing with different scenarios.

“Everyone has been in these scenarios before and when you get into them, you rely on the preparation you’ve done, which we felt was good. I think part of the slow start was how well they started. We gave them access but then we also had an opportunity to exit and we turned the ball over.”

Centre Alex Dunbar’s try from a lineout was symbolic of Ireland’s sluggishness.

“We were probably a little bit sluggish on that lineout try they scored, a little bit of a special move where we knew they’re a quality side who could come up with something unique,” said Best.

“You always prepare for what you’ve seen before but you also prepare yourself for something you haven’t seen. I think that summed up where we were probably a little bit behind.

“Myself and Tadhg in there just didn’t quite cover all the bases you have to at this level.”

For Ireland to get into the lead for the first time in the second half and still lose this game made it all the more frustrating, particularly as it was a case of Best and his players not doing what they had set out to do.

“The big thing we said was that we had to keep playing,” said Best. “We had seen in the first half that when they get the ball, they’re very dangerous and unfortunately we just gave up a few penalties, lost field position and they put us under pressure and we gave up another penalty.

“That gave them the lead back, we feel, reasonably cheaply and the talk was to keep attacking them. We know how good they are and we also know how good we are when we go out with that mentality.”

Hat-trick hero Stander: ‘We need to take every chance at points we get’

IRELAND GOT THEIR Six Nations campaign up and running in Rome this afternoon with a hammering of Italy.

CJ Stander grabbed a treble of tries — as did Craig Gilroy — in a 63-10 demolition of Conor O’Shea’s side.

The win — a week after defeat in Edinburgh — puts Joe Schmidt’s side on six points and leading the table for a couple of hours.

“We were disappointed from last week, we didn’t start the game right way,” Stander told RTE afterwards..

“We just came out and said we have to work hard for each other. It’s easy if everyone brings their part.

“We were sluggish last week, we didn’t come out the first half and play the game the way we wanted to. I think this week we played the game how we wanted to. In fairness to our backline and to Paddy, he controlled the game and our forwards kept on scrumming well and that made a big difference this week.”

In the first year of the bonus point system in the competition, the nine tries scored by Ireland at the Stadio Olimpico may well prove decisive.

“It’s something we didn’t mention during the week but it was probably something in the back of our minds, it’s going to be tough for us from now on in the competition so we need to take every point that we can,” the Munster man said after picking up his man-of-the-match award.

“And in fairness to Jamie and the leaders they said we needed that last try and we got it on 82 minutes and it just shows we can play longer than 80 minutes.”

Gilroy gets chance to stake Ireland claim in Ulster’s Pro12 clash with Glasgow

ROMAN HAT-TRICK HERO Craig Gilroy will have another chance to impress Joe Schmidt in Ulster’s Pro12 meeting with Glasgow Warriors [Ravenhill, Saturday 3pm, Sky Sports].

Gilroy is joined in the starting XV by two more of Schmidt’s fringe internationals — Tommy Bowe, who came off the bench in last week’s win over Edinburgh, and Luke Marshall.

Les Kiss also welcomes back Ruan Pienaar who has recovered from a knee injury and makes his first start of 2017.

Ben Te’o starts for England as Jonathan Joseph drops from squad

BEN TE’O WILL start a Test match for the first time after being named at outside centre for England as they get set to take on Italy in the RBS Six Nations at Twickenham this Saturday (live on RTÉ Two, kick-off 3pm).

Te’o, who has won his five caps to date from the bench, comes in for Jonathan Joseph who drops out of the match-day 23 completely.

He’ll form a new-look centre partnership with Owen Farrell while Jonny May is recalled to the right wing to form the back three alongside Mike Brown and Elliot Daly.

In the half-backs, Danny Care replaces Ben Youngs at nine but George Ford keeps the number 10 jersey.

The front five remains the same with Dylan Hartley sandwiched by Joe Marler and Dan Cole while Joe Lunchbury and Courtney Lawes form the second row.

James Haskell is the fourth and final change from the side that beat Wales two weeks ago and he takes his place at openside; Maro Itoje and Nathan Hughes completing the pack.

Prop Mako Vunipola has returned from a lengthy knee injury-layoff to take his place among the replacements.

England rugby coach Jones wonders if Scotland can back up ‘big talk’

ENGLAND HEAD COACH Eddie Jones tried to get an early blow in against Scotland by questioning whether they could back up “their big talk” in next month’s Calcutta Cup clash at Twickenham.

Jones’ men remained on course for a second successive Grand Slam with a 36-15 win over Italy at Twickenham yesterday, after eventually overcoming the Azzurri’s spoiling tactics of refusing to commit to rucks.

Victory over Scotland in the Calcutta Cup clash on 11 March would see Six Nations leaders England equal world champions New Zealand’s all-time record of 18 successive wins by a leading rugby union nation.

Scotland, however, are on a roll after beating Wales 29-13 at Murrayfield on Saturday and can complete a Triple Crown by causing an upset at Twickenham.

“We believe we can beat England if we play like we did in the second half,” said Scotland captain John Barclay after his side scored 20 unanswered points against Wales at Murrayfield.

But the fact remains that Scotland have not beaten England at Twickenham since 1983.

‘Expectations’

“We’re looking forward to Scotland coming down,” said Jones ahead of the Triple Crown decider.

“They’re talking big already, they’re on a roll, they’re confident, but they’ve got to carry round the expectations now for the whole Scotland nation for the next two weeks before they come down and play us,” the Australian added.

For all the frustration he felt with Italy’s approach on Sunday, Jones — yet to lose a match as England coach after he was appointed following the team’s first-round exit at the 2015 World Cup — had no complaints about his side’s position.

“If you said where we wanted to be at the end of three rounds (of the Six Nations), we’re exactly there.

“Six tries, three wins, a bonus point. Mate, we’re flying.”
